Jimmy John Liautaud, the visionary founder of his Gourmet Sandwiches, is equally admired for his commitment to philanthropy. Alongside his wife Leslie and their children, he founded the Liautaud Family Foundation in 2017, marking a significant step in their journey of giving back to the community. The Foundation's philanthropic efforts are widespread, supporting a variety of organizations such as the Mayo Clinic, Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, the American Heart Association, and several others dedicated to health, crisis intervention, youth support, and community development. A key focus for his family is their support for the Horatio Alger Association, which provides scholarships to high school students who have overcome considerable challenges. Jimmy John's business acumen is equally notable. In 2007, his sandwich empire reached $300 million in sales, leading to a partnership with investor Weston Presidio, which significantly boosted the company's revenue. By 2014, amidst the buzz of restaurant IPOs and public scrutiny, he contemplated taking his company public. His preference for privacy and control over his business led him to explore alternatives. This exploration brought him to Roark Capital, a firm with a rich portfolio in the franchise sector, and a previous acquaintance, Neil Aronson. Roark's bid seemed like the perfect fit, promising strategic support while allowing him to maintain his business's unique identity. After two years of getting to know the Roark team, in 2016, he sold a majority stake in his company to them, retaining a 35% share and continuing as Chairman. The company's management structure remained intact under this new arrangement, with James North becoming CEO and President. In 2019, Jimmy John's founder merged his remaining interest with Inspire Brands while still holding shares in the conglomerate. Nowadays, his primary focus has shifted to overseeing the charitable activities of his Foundation and managing his family's investment company.
